“-aceae” is the suffix that is used to denote plant, algal, bacterial, and fungal families. Aceae is Latin in its origins, and is the feminine plural of “resembling.” Asteraceae is the aster family, for example – encompassing related plants from chamomile to dandelion (these plants “resemble” asters). This morpheme extends outside of taxonomy within the English language, perhaps most relevantly for us in the word “herbaceous.”
This 2018 project seeks to create a “plant family” of sorts through plant stories – to draw plant people together and promote their work as herbalists, healers, communicators with nature, medicine makers, artists, and dreamers.
